I didn’t know that it was the 75th anniversary of It’s a Wonderful Life when I decided to do a tribute to it in my comic strip, Mr. Fitz. I like to do something special at the holidays in Mr. Fitz most years, and with suggestions for how to make it work from my wife and son, I finally came up with the Mr. Fitz version of the Jimmy Stewart classic.
A couple of notes to readers new to the comic strip: Mr. Blustbag is an evil administrator who is all for testing and the very worst aspects of education reform. Mrs. Methuselah, who shows up late in this storyline, is a wise old teacher – possibly the oldest in the world – who has a collection of antique teaching tools. Among them is a ditto machine that can time travel (this amazing machine was revealed during a recent Back to the Future-themed series).
Clarence is right – each of our lives touches so many other lives, but teachers touch more lives than most. In the limited time and space I had, that is what I hope I conveyed here… and what I hope teachers can remember as we head into what looks to be a challenging new year.
